Who says you can’t find a mature buck with decent antlers in south MO?? Well if you’d asked me up til now, I probably would’ve told you that! I know big deer are killed down here every year, it’s just I’m from north MO and there’s no comaparison in the quantity of those big deer from up there to here. Above is a pic of one such deer that’s not a monster, but is definately an mature buck with some pretty impressive headgear.
I also had to include a few others that were just sort of fun. I tell you, I get just about as much enjoyment out of checking the game cams as I do hunting. It’s like christmas every time I put that memory stick in the computer!!
We’ve got a hunt to share with you this week that we never got published from last year so stay tuned for that and hopefully a lot more!

Young 8 - Coming Under Stand
I’ve been having fun up here in North MO, but have yet to connect with a mature buck. I’ve had lots of deer around me and have gotten some neat video of deer behavior, but the big ones are eluding me. Today I was close to a mature buck that slipped by at 40yrds. He was behind a bit of brush, but I did manage to catch a little video of him. He’s no monster, but I believe he’s mature enough to be a shooter, especially with the bow. The second pic is of a young 8pt that came and hung out under my stand yesterday. These pics aren’t the greatest as they’re taken by my phone off of my video. I’ll put a little video together here in a week or so of snippets of the deer & wildlife I’ve saw this week. I’m going back after them tomorrow and then it’s rifle season on Saturday. Ought to be a fun weekend!

It started off as a bad day when I realized that I had forgot my boots at the house….. It was gonna be a cold, wet walk to my stand. I was able to make it until 9 am and I had to get out of the stand. I was back at the truck at 9:50am. I started down the road and I went about 1/2 mi and noticed this buck standing on a farm that I could hunt. I went about a 1/2 mile past and parked the truck. The stalk was now on. I got with in 100yrds and seen him on the same ridge with his nose still to the ground. I continued my stalk and got with in 50 yrds and I could hear him grunting like crazy. He continued to go back and forth and I knew he was searching for a doe that he had been chasing. As he started to leave I moved my arm and let him see it move and gave a soft grunt… the rest is history. He came hard grunting all the way. He thought I (the movement) he saw was his doe!!! He came to 18 yards and that was when I let the arrow fly. He went about 100 yrds and there was no worrys about following the blood trail!!! God is good!

I had to share these pics with you right off the bat. I was hiking with my family at the Nature Center (Springfield, MO) when we had all sorts of neat encounters with the deer there. My kids absolutely loved it and my release finger just kept twitching;-)
My hunt this last Friday (Oct 21st) was a great one! I was hunting down in southwest Mo, on a property that is fairly new to me. My strategy this year was to hunt the edges to where I could see a lot of ground and sort of be scouting while I’m hunting. I’ve learned the hard way that going into a new property and hunting a small area in the middle of the timber that looks really good can lead to many deerless hunts and nothing learned of deer movement in the process. It’s better to hunt a more open area that may not be as conducive to bow range, but at least you can get on the deer soon as you begin to see some patterns emerge.

Hello fellow outdoorsmen! I hate that I haven’t been able to get you more content lately, as for me that means that I’m not spending enough time out in the great outdoors! I thought I’d go ahead and show you my antler plaque I made for this last fall’s bowkill buck. This might interest a few of you anyway.
The wood plaque part was a cinch with my pattern and my router, but the skull covering was a different story! I tell you, the year before last it was really easy cutting the leather to cover the skull and it really turned out great. Evidently I was lucky, because this year it wasn’t so easy. For the life of me I couldn’t get the leather skull cover cut right to fit so I finally surrendered and tried something a bit creative. I used crayola air dry clay from hobby lobby and filled out the skull. I let that dry and then I hot glued rustic twine in a sort of wrap around the skull area. This went much easier and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised with the results!
Hopefully I’ll have some hunting/fishing stories and/or vid for you here real soon. If not before, you’ll definitely be seeing some footage from this spring as I’m going to try and ramp this site up a bit with the turkey season here in Missouri.

I shot this buck the evening of November 12th which is the day before rifle season here in MO. It was a rainy, nasty day on Friday. With everything wet, the deer were pretty much like ghosts in the woods – you had to depend on the eyes because you sure weren’t going to hear them. This buck along with a younger 8pt snuck in on me and when I saw them they were at about 40yrds and cruising. I had an eight foot shooting lane that the younger one was in and this one was close on his heels. This gave me about 5 to 10 seconds to make the decision on whether to shoot…
Friday morning I had rattled in a really nice 8pt that came by me at about 30 yrds, but he stayed in the brush offering me no shot. When I saw the right side of this buck’s rack, I made the quick decision that this was the 8 that I had saw that morning and that he was a shooter. He stepped into the shooting lane at 35 yards and I bleated, but he completely ignored me! I practically had to yell, and on the 3rd “yell” he stopped just inside the lane. The arrow released and I heard a loud pop, I knew he was hit hard as he never really ran and barely made it over the next ridge. It was about that time that it started pouring rain again which was nerve racking as I knew that my blood trail was going to be gone soon!
The rain slowed to a mist so I decided to wait. I waited an hour and after making a few phone calls and saying a few prayers, my cousins and I trailed him over the next ridge and found him laying just on the other side. My kids were pumped, both that dad finally got him a buck this year and that God answered their prayers! The shot had been good – I hit him in the very back of the right shoulder and it went through and lodged in the left shoulder putting in right in the boiler room. The shoulder hit explained the loud pop I had heard!
As always, it’s such a great moment to find that deer, but it also was a moment of truth. As I began to look the buck over I began to think that this was one of the deer that I had passed at 10yrds earlier in the week that I had on video. After getting him home we reviewed the footage from earlier in the week, and sure enough, there he was walking 10 yards from my stand on a morning hunt earlier in the week! I tell you this to let you in on a lesson that I learned. If you have a buck in mind that you’ve seen earlier in the day or recently, it’s very easy for your mind to make that jump to that buck when making a split decision. Don’t know if there’s a remedy to this, but it may be something to keep in mind at the very least. In the end, I’m very thankful to have this deer – the meat will go to good use, and my kids are very proud of their daddy – both of which are worthy reasons to enjoy this great sport!
P.S. – Unfortunately with all the rain, I didn’t have my vid camera along.
Tip of the week – rattle and grunt often, I’ve rattled and grunted 5 bucks in just this week! GOOD LUCK!!

I’d like to say a big congrats to my brother-in-law Stephen. This buck has some great tine length and is pretty heavy as well! A great all around mature whitetail. He shot this great buck November 4th up in north MO. He had saw a smaller buck chasing some does early and it wasn’t long before another doe came through with this bruiser on her trail. He shot this buck at 25 yrds and had an easy recovery.
I’ll be heading back up to north MO this evening and I’m hoping to meet a buck of this caliber sometime this next week! Congrats again Stephen, you were deserved this buck!
1st Doe - October 1st 2010 - Evening Hunt
Just had a great few days up in north Missouri. We had a bit of a cold snap this last week and it really seemed to have the deer moving where I was. They are all over the acorns right now. The best advice I can give you for now is to find a grove of oaks and get ready! As always, white oaks seem to be the tree of choice, but if you find a tree with a good mast of acorns, stay close!
I was all set to video, but this doe came sneaking in from behind. She made it all the way in to 20yrds before I heard her. The wind was swirling on me and just as I got turned around she seemed to wind me. She trotted a few steps away out to about 25yrds. I knew it was now or never, so I let the arrow fly. She was quartering away perfectly and my arrow caught the heart and at least one lung. I saw her go down about 65 yrds away from where I shot her. That was the 4th deer I had seen that evening, so needless to say, it was a great hunt!
I’ve got video I’m putting together of a really nice 11pt that came right under my stand. Stay tuned …
