Who says you can’t find a mature buck with decent antlers in south MO?? Well if you’d asked me up til now, I probably would’ve told you that! I know big deer are killed down here every year, it’s just I’m from north MO and there’s no comaparison in the quantity of those big deer from up there to here. Above is a pic of one such deer that’s not a monster, but is definately an mature buck with some pretty impressive headgear.
I also had to include a few others that were just sort of fun. I tell you, I get just about as much enjoyment out of checking the game cams as I do hunting. It’s like christmas every time I put that memory stick in the computer!!
We’ve got a hunt to share with you this week that we never got published from last year so stay tuned for that and hopefully a lot more!

Here are a couple of pics of some young bucks that hopefully make it through this year. Looks like both of these deer have some great potential and should make for some fun encounters this bow season!
Getting pics in our area in north Missouri has gotten a bit more tough this year as we aren’t allowed to set out salt licks, corn or anything else to congregate deer pre-season for some pics. There were a few cases (and I do mean few) of CWD up north of our area that has put our all powerful conservation dept on high alert and there seems to be a little bit of kneejerking going on around there.
Just got another camera out down here in southwest MO so hopefully I’ll have more pics to share with you soon. Stay tuned…

Young 8 - Coming Under Stand
I’ve been having fun up here in North MO, but have yet to connect with a mature buck. I’ve had lots of deer around me and have gotten some neat video of deer behavior, but the big ones are eluding me. Today I was close to a mature buck that slipped by at 40yrds. He was behind a bit of brush, but I did manage to catch a little video of him. He’s no monster, but I believe he’s mature enough to be a shooter, especially with the bow. The second pic is of a young 8pt that came and hung out under my stand yesterday. These pics aren’t the greatest as they’re taken by my phone off of my video. I’ll put a little video together here in a week or so of snippets of the deer & wildlife I’ve saw this week. I’m going back after them tomorrow and then it’s rifle season on Saturday. Ought to be a fun weekend!

This is a grainy pic off of some video I took right at dark this evening (Nov. 4th). It was a great hunt that has left me pumped to get back out into the woods! I’ll put these snippets of vid together at the end of the week for you all to enjoy, but here is a quick pic to show one of the guys I’m thinking about chasing! Follow me this week as I post pics and stories (hopefully some video) as I chase the ever exciting, ever elusive whitetail deer! The rut is on – get out there!!

A friend of mine down in Southwest MO sent me these pics along with the great story. Congrats Joe – thanks for sharing!!
It started off as a bad day when I realized that I had forgot my boots at the house….. It was gonna be a cold, wet walk to my stand. I was able to make it until 9 am and I had to get out of the stand. I was back at the truck at 9:50am. I started down the road and I went about 1/2 mi and noticed this buck standing on a farm that I could hunt. I went about a 1/2 mile past and parked the truck. The stalk was now on. I got with in 100yrds and seen him on the same ridge with his nose still to the ground. I continued my stalk and got with in 50 yrds and I could hear him grunting like crazy. He continued to go back and forth and I knew he was searching for a doe that he had been chasing. As he started to leave I moved my arm and let him see it move and gave a soft grunt… the rest is history. He came hard grunting all the way. He thought I (the movement) he saw was his doe!!! He came to 18 yards and that was when I let the arrow fly. He went about 100 yrds and there was no worrys about following the blood trail!!! God is good!

I had to share these pics with you right off the bat. I was hiking with my family at the Nature Center (Springfield, MO) when we had all sorts of neat encounters with the deer there. My kids absolutely loved it and my release finger just kept twitching;-)
My hunt this last Friday (Oct 21st) was a great one! I was hunting down in southwest Mo, on a property that is fairly new to me. My strategy this year was to hunt the edges to where I could see a lot of ground and sort of be scouting while I’m hunting. I’ve learned the hard way that going into a new property and hunting a small area in the middle of the timber that looks really good can lead to many deerless hunts and nothing learned of deer movement in the process. It’s better to hunt a more open area that may not be as conducive to bow range, but at least you can get on the deer soon as you begin to see some patterns emerge.

Magnificent Buck Survives!
I’m not sure if you’ll remember the story from last year’s muzzleloader season, or you may be new to the site, but I’ve got some history on this buck! I had a cousin up in North MO that had a pic of this buck that you see above, but he never got a crack at him until muzzleloader season.
He put what he thought was a good hit on the buck as he dropped right in his tracks. When a deer drops like a sack of potatoes, we don’t usually think that we need to be ready for a follow up shot, but this story will make you think twice about that common notion. Long story short, the buck jumped up and ran off and left no real blood trail to speak of. After several days of looking for the buck, my cousin had to concede that he wasn’t going to find him, and we were all sick for him.
That is until this week when he sent me a pic of the same deer up on his feet as large as life and still sporting VERY impressive head gear!! If you’ll look close you’ll see the baseball size scar that is just below the spine, but other than that, the deer looks great! Couldn’t have been happier for him and you can bet that I’ll keep you posted on this deer this year!
I’ve been super busy this year, and my posts are fewer and farther between, but keep checking in as we’ve got some great deer in mind for this year and we are going to try to share them with you through pics and hopefully some video!!

Hello fellow outdoorsmen! I hate that I haven’t been able to get you more content lately, as for me that means that I’m not spending enough time out in the great outdoors! I thought I’d go ahead and show you my antler plaque I made for this last fall’s bowkill buck. This might interest a few of you anyway.
The wood plaque part was a cinch with my pattern and my router, but the skull covering was a different story! I tell you, the year before last it was really easy cutting the leather to cover the skull and it really turned out great. Evidently I was lucky, because this year it wasn’t so easy. For the life of me I couldn’t get the leather skull cover cut right to fit so I finally surrendered and tried something a bit creative. I used crayola air dry clay from hobby lobby and filled out the skull. I let that dry and then I hot glued rustic twine in a sort of wrap around the skull area. This went much easier and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised with the results!
Hopefully I’ll have some hunting/fishing stories and/or vid for you here real soon. If not before, you’ll definitely be seeing some footage from this spring as I’m going to try and ramp this site up a bit with the turkey season here in Missouri.

Mmmmm.....Mmmmm.....Good
Mmmm…. Summer Sausage from my early bow season doe. Just recently got it back and boy is it good!! A package of Ritz, sausage, and cheese – that’s a snack that can’t be beat! Ok, on to a scouting update….
In Missouri we just wrapped up our regular firearms deer season a week or so ago and are still in the extended doe season for most of the state. Needless to say, this is making for some tricky hunting when it comes to getting back into the swing of bowhunting.
Not only are the deer spooky, they are also unpredictable during this time of year due to another pattern change as the rut starts to slow. I was finally able to get back out in the woods for a short evening hunt tonight and saw two fresh scrapes that had recently been cleaned. As the temps drop you can expect to see more and more deer hitting food sources. They do this to both keep their calorie intake high for warmth, and to recover from the rut that has had them running hard for a few weeks. This being said, I wouldn’t forsake the grunt tube and the estrous scent altogether. Young does come into estrous late many times and you can bet the bucks will still be up for a little, shall we say “tail” even late in the game.
My best guess for this time of year is to still focus a bit on the pinch points for bucks still doing a little cruising for does as well as setting up in staging areas 50 to 60 yrds into the brush right near a food source. I know that bowhunting is tough work this time of year, but hey, someone’s got to do it!!
